Technique of Breeding:
- The breeding process for major carps is typically initiated during the onset of the regular monsoon season when the fish reach full maturity and the water temperature decreases.
- Female breeders can be identified by their round, soft, and swollen abdomen, along with a reddish vent. Gentle pressure on the abdomen can cause the release of eggs.
- Male breeders can be distinguished by the roughness on the dorsal surface of their pectoral fins. Males that release milt freely are selected for breeding purposes.
Dosage of Pituitary Extract:
a) The dosage of pituitary gland is calculated based on the weight of the brooders to be injected.
b) A single high dose is found to be effective when brooders are in optimal condition and favorable weather conditions exist.
c) Rohu seed production techniques show positive response to two injections, while catla and mrigal respond well to both one and two injections.
d) A Provocative Dose of 2-3 mg of pituitary gland per kg body weight is initially administered to the female breeder only.
e) If one of the two males is not in the freely oozing stage, an initial injection of Provocative Dose at 2-3 mg/kg body weight can be given to the male.
f) After 6 hours, a second dose of 5-8 mg/kg body weight is given to the female, while both males receive the first or second dose at 2-3 mg/kg body weight.
g) A breeding set consists of two males for each female. To ensure a good match, the combined weight of the males should be equal to or greater than that of the female.
h) Slight adjustments in doses may be made based on the maturity condition of the brooders and prevailing environmental factors.
i) A pair of fish typically requires 1-3 pituitary glands for effective results.
